The Who, Why, What, When and How of the 2014 Scenic Shore 150:
We’re in! We’re doing it! Wes and I will be riding 150 miles on bicycles from Milwaukee to Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin in the Scenic Shore 150 to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
In 2005 Wes’ mom was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer with no cure. At the time her doctor’s predicted she had about 18 months or less left to live. Harvesting her own stem cells to be treated with chemo and reintroduced into her body was her best option but the anticipated success rate was low.
The most terrifying part of her diagnosis was that there were not many treatment options available. There were also not many success stories with Multiple Myeloma.
With advances in treatment options, her tenacity and strong faith Wes’ mom is currently in remission, 9 years after her original diagnosis. In another similar story my aunt has also been successful in her fight against Lymphoma for many years. To say they are inspiring is an understatement.
It’s wonderful to know there are success stories out there. It’s our goal to help create more.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society helps all blood cancer patients. It raises funds to help provide more therapies for blood cancer patients. They have invested almost $1 Billion in research to save lives, to date. Despite progress, more than one third of blood cancer patients do not survive five years after their diagnosis.
We know first hand the impact these advances can make towards saving lives. So we’re committed to training and pedaling our butts off for two days to help raise money for a cause we feel strongly about.
Wes did the ride in 2007 with his mom, my pregnant self and our two daughters cheering him on. I will never forget seeing him cross that finish line. His legs were rubber, his butt sore, but the pride on his face when he hugged his mom was priceless.
I’ve dreamt of doing this ride with him ever since then but I’ve never felt physically able to do so because of my weight. After losing 75 pounds this past year, I am ready to give it a shot. Will I be ready? I don’t know for sure, but I do know that no one is ready for the ride of their life after being diagnosed with cancer. They just do it–and so will I.
The bike ride is on July 19-20, 2014.
We will ride 75 miles along some of Wisconsin’s prettiest roads up the Lake Michigan shore, from Mequon, Wi to University of Wisconsin/Manitowoc on day one. Day two will take us another 75 miles to Sturgeon Bay, WI. That’s 150 miles in 2 days on a pedal bike!
How You Can Help:
We have a goal of raising $1,000 each to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. This is a tax deductible contribution and 75 cents of every dollar go towards the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s mission for a cure. Our fundraising deadline is June 30, 2014.
Will you please help us by making a donation?
Thank you all for your love and support!
Please keep your fingers crossed for good weather!
