Motherhood

beautiful woman in blue dress near the seaHarmony, how can it be defined? “The inner cadence of contentment we feel when the melody of life is in tune.” ~ Sarah Ban Breathnach, Simple Abundance

When is life in tune? When we’ve somehow managed to balance the expectations of our loves, families, jobs, and homes, with our own expectations in the areas of our passions, health, creativity, and fun in a way that everyone feels satisfied and we get to relax and be ourselves.

Yeah right…in a perfect world maybe.  No one likes to take the back burner and let’s face it, there are only two to three front burners available at any given time during a limited number of hours in a day.

Domestic Tranquility

I listened to a podcast the other day about creating domestic tranquility in our homes and families.  I laughed out loud in the car by myself thinking about the ebb and flow of my home from chaotic to catastrophic depending on our work/activity levels.

Calm?  Tranquil?  Aren’t those only moments before the storm?  If my house is ever tranquil, it’s a sign that I need to start peeking into rooms to see what the kids are up to.

But I know (and you know it too) that when life gets too busy and we get spread too thin that everything becomes more challenging, We work harder, we stay up later at night, work all our nooks and crannies, and muscle life to get things done but despite the extra effort, we still fall farther behind.

If we stay at that pace, eventually we completely succumb to life’s overwhelm. We get stupid and think we can run around crazy like a chicken with it’s head cut off. (Do they really run around like that?)  We start to feel like our “stuff” is more important that someone else’s.  We begin to resent people who aren’t in as much of a hurry as we are.  All resulting in making stupid mistakes and alienating anyone who may have been willing to help us.

We’ve got to stop the insanity!

(Cue the wine and relaxing background music.)

We’ve got it all backwards.  Instead of working longer and harder when things get tough, we’d be better off, pulling back and spending some time loving, dreaming, praying, creating, and reflecting on what’s working and what isn’t.

The funny part is that if we don’t catch ourselves and pull ourselves out of that “work harder” cycle, our bodies will do it for us.  Cue on the flu, a three day migraine, or bronchitis–something bad enough that we find ourselves in bed, unable to perform.

Harmony

We talk about wanting to achieve “balance” in our life.  There really is no such thing as a balanced life.  Something always needs to be pushed to the back burner to make room for something else to become a priority.  And it’s our job to choose which things need to play the background, and which the melody within the finite time we have.

Unimportant things always try to steal the limelight. Things that feel urgent at the moment, but will rarely be remembered.  My husband is wonderful at reminding me, when life gets stressful, to do a mental check, to see if what I’m worrying about in the moment will matter in 1 year, 2 years, or 5 years.  Nearly 100% of the time it won’t.

So I’m trying to be smarter about how I spend my day, requiring myself to dedicate time to reflect, regroup, and re-prioritize.  Time to be grateful, and time to rest.  I’m also making a list of triggers that signal I’m heading into an overwork tailspin so I recognize them before I’m out of control.

I love this quote from Dave Ramsey, “You must gain control over your money or the lack of it will forever control you.”   Same as with our time.  If we don’t control how it’s spent, it will control us.

If mama’s not happy, nobody’s happy.  We owe it to our families as much as we owe it to ourselves to choose carefully how we will control our time, and to include time to step back and breathe so the tune we’re playing can be a beautiful one.

“As we learn how to pause and bring the principles of gratitude, simplicity, and order into our lives, harmony emerges.” – Sara Ban Breathnach

The absolute best budgeting tools and resources!

I just blogged over at FatWallet a post, sharing 10 Ways to Involve Your Kids in Your Family Budget.  Having grown up in a household that didn’t share a whole lot about money, I went through some “growing pains” with money that resulted in a few skinned knees along the way.  It’s my husband’s and my hope that involving our kids in our personal finances and teaching them how to handle money will give them skills that will pay off down the road, literally.

When we were just getting started budgeting and learning to manage our money (and stopped letting our money manage us), we struggled to find the right tools to keep track of everything.  We tried a lot of things that worked and some that didn’t.  In the hopes of helping you save time (and money), here’s our family’s list of the absolute best resources for family budgeting.  [click to continue…]

make your dreams and priorities countWho would we see if we were to take a peek into your calendar?  Most of our calendars reflect the life of an overwhelmed, overworked, person who is living reactively pinging from one “have to do” activity to the next.  Calendars have the potential to be a life-changing tool if we use them properly.  However, more often than not they are a prison guard keeping us trapped in the vortex of a hurricane of tasks.

We go through life, living each day in reaction mode, attending meetings, conferences, completing tasks, and going places because we think we need to or feel obligated.  Down-time rarely exists and when we get a day to slow down for a moment we end up crashing and sleeping half of it away.

We talk about wanting better work / life balance, a better marriage, better finances, and many of us to be better parents.  But we’re so lost in the chaos of daily life that we don’t stop frequently enough to take steps to getting what we want.

I listened to a podcast the other day that really made me stop and think.  How would my life look if I were to plan it around my dreams instead of my have-to’s?  Who would I become? [click to continue…]

Inspire Yourself to Live Out Your Dream!

Have you ever wanted to find a way to supplement your salary with a side-gig, make extra money from home, or build a dream business around your talents, skills, and passions?  I just wrote a post on FatWallet in celebration of Women’s Money Week on the topic of Using What You Know to Increase Income.  And as a supplement to the post, I’m rounding up some of my favorite resources to help you do just that!

Sadly, as women, we don’t always realize our value.  It could be that we don’t want to come across as full of ourselves, or that we cannot see the value in ourselves that others see.  It could be that we’re struggling with the insecurity, self doubt, the impostor syndrome or that we think we don’t know enough yet to be a leader in our families, communities, and business niche.

Whatever the reason, it’s time we strip away our inhibitions and step into our greatness.  It’s time for us all to become the women we’re meant to be.  Here’s a list of my favorite books to help you realize your worth and brainstorm ways to turn what you know into extra money or maybe even a dream career! shocked girl reading a text messageMost of the time I’m totally grateful for the memories I’m making with our kids, but not always.

I read a hilarious post on ScaryMommy last night about a texting lesson she had with her 13 year old son that reminded me of a horrifying life-scarring situation I created for my oldest daughter earlier this year.

It’s easy to think of my 14 year old as an adult since she’s so responsible and ultra helpful. She’s wired to nurture and can’t help managing everyone around her.

So last summer she was mothering me.  I remember the moment like a film strip, and can relive it frame-by-frame in my mind…

Income Seldom Exceeds Personal Development - Jim RohnHave you ever been stuck in a cycle you can’t seem to break?  Whether it be personal, generational, or environmental like being lost in the woods, we all have moments in life where our progress stalls and we feel like we keep having to experience the same things over and over again.

I had an aha moment Thursday night. My mom came over and helped me swap my office and our dining room so we’d have more room to open up our table and the office clutter would be less visible from the front door.  Thank goodness she had the foresight to bring some wine because it was hard work!

In addition to the computer stuff, printers, mouse, desk lamp, office supplies, etc., we moved hundreds of books on success, business building, mindset, sales, social media, blogging, and marketing. These were just the physical books.  They don’t include all the audios, videos, training programs and eBooks I bought along the way.

We laughed at how obsessive I can be (of course I got that tendency from her.)  Let’s just say I took to heart the Jim Rohn quote, “Income seldom exceeds personal development,” when I was working from home building my blog and growing my home based business. [click to continue…]

Until It Is Carved in StoneMy grandpa used to joke that life is like a roll of toilet paper, the closer to the end you get, the faster it goes.  I see it happening as a parent, watching our kids grow up.

I wish I could bottle the moments now as they’re happening to re-live these normal but chaotic and crazy days as a mom when the kids are grown and my house is empty.  I sometimes get overwhelmed to the point of tears when I stop to realize how big they’ve gotten and acknowledge that it felt like ten minutes ago, I was walking around the house in the dark with their warm soft tiny heads nuzzled under my chin as I hummed trying to calm them down to sleep.

What I don’t stop to think about is that I’m getting older too.  (It’s because I’m not, of course.) [click to continue…]

I Double Dare You

by Heather Stephens on August 12, 2012 · 0 comments

Doing the Double Dare Drop, Magic WatersCaution, this story may induce stress as it involves wearing a swimming suit in front of coworkers and the consequences of flinging an overweight body over a water slide with a 75′ drop inducing the worst wedgie you could ever imagine.

I was reading a book a while ago about wellness that talked about how many Americans are living a life of imprisonment, in this free country, because they’re trapped inside of fat bodies.  It really made me think about how many things I’ve given up, excused myself from, or avoided because of how I think I’ll look doing them.

Tennis, basketball with the kids, swimming activities, bicycling, wearing shorts, sleeveless clothing, and skirts above the knee to name just a few.

“Each of us must confront our own fears, must come face to face with them. How we handle our fears will determine where we go with the rest of our lives. To experience adventure or to be limited by the fear of it.” ― Judy Blume, Tiger Eyes

Committing to Adventure in Spite of Fear:

Being aware of this tendency to avoid doing things that may put me in a potential position of looking like “Chunk” doing the truffle shuffle from The Goonies, I’ve committed to pushing myself to do things even though my insecure self may be digging in her heels while screaming, “No!”

As always in this amazing serendipitous world I live in, the minute I committed to changing something about myself, an opportunity to test my commitment presented itself to me. [click to continue…]

Do you resist structure and routines too? I think of myself as a spaghetti thinker. I love the freedom to change my mind whenever I wish, choose my own adventure, and live by my own rules.  Structured routines always felt confining when I worked from home.

“I’m creative, I don’t do structure!”

I spent thirteen years as a stay at home mom before I became a working mom.  There was never a rhyme or reason to my day.  I would work on “non thinking things” when the kids were awake and the house was bustling and then rush to cram in some time two work on things that required focus when the kids fell asleep or were preoccupied with something else.

I always felt frustrated because I didn’t get done all I wanted to accomplish, whether it was project for the house, or a blog post for my business.  I tried dozens of day planners, thinking they would help me get control, but nothing worked for more than a few days.  The only time I really felt like I had control over my life was when I was following FlyLady, but in my typical A.D.D. style, I got excited about a new adventure (I became a VA to my Arbonne upline while building my own Arbonne business) and slowly my daily flight plan started to slip.
